Milan missionary fathers, the pioneers of the Central Bengal missions, arrived in 1855 and Berhampore
was chosen as their headquarters (parish). After the death of Fr. Albino

remained closed. The centre was shifted to Krishnagar and since then the small
Catholic Community of Berhampore was being attended from Krishnagar. “From
their fruits you shall know them”. This norm could apply to the Salesian
Missionaries. The advent of Salesian Missionaries and their contribution marked
a new epoch in the mission work. The Salesians reopened Berhampore as the
mission centre for the whole of Murshidabad District in 1955. Rev. Fr. Lazzaro
sdb was the first Salesian to reside in this town which is also the
headquarters of Murshidabad District. In
1961 the Sisters of Mary Immaculate began their apostolic work by establishing
a house, which was blessed by Rt. Rev. L. R. Morrow. Berhampore mothered many
new mission centres. However, the year 1978 witnessed the
arrival of Fr. Sebastian Kuzhipala sdb., he was assigned to take special care
of the Santal community. He renovated the old churches and built new churches
in several villages. As the parish is growing
rapidly a gigantic parish church was errected by the
